How the Maximum Heart Rate Calculator works
Enter your age.
Each formula predicts a maximum heart rate in beats per minute.
The Tanaka and Nes formulas are generally considered more accurate than the traditional 220 − age.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Age (years) | 40 |
|---|
- Fox: 220 − 40 = 180 bpm.
- Tanaka: 208 − 28 = 180 bpm.
- Gulati (women): 206 − 35.2 = 171 bpm.
Result:
| Fox (220 − age) | 180 |
|---|---|
| Tanaka (208 − 0.7 × age) | 180 |
| Gulati, women (206 − 0.88 × age) | 171 |
| Inbar (205.8 − 0.685 × age) | 178 |
| Nes (211 − 0.64 × age) | 185 |
Frequently asked questions
Is the estimate exact?
No. Individual maximum heart rates vary by about ±10–12 beats per minute around the prediction. A supervised test gives the true value.
Should I exercise at maximum heart rate?
Only under guidance. Most training is done at lower percentages of maximum.
