How the Healthy Weight Range Calculator works
Enter your height and current weight.
The range comes from rearranging the BMI formula for the WHO normal range.
Your own BMI is shown alongside.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Height (cm) | 175 |
|---|---|
| Current weight (kg) | 82 |
- Height 1.75 m, so height² = 3.0625.
- Lower end = 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.7 kg; upper end = 25 × 3.0625 = 76.6 kg.
- At 82 kg your BMI is 26.8: +5.4 kg above the range.
Result:
| Lower end, BMI 18.5 (kg) | 56.7 |
|---|---|
| Upper end, BMI 25 (kg) | 76.6 |
| Your BMI | 26.8 |
| Kilograms above or below the range | +5.4 kg above the range |
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI a good measure for everyone?
It is a screening tool. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, and cut-offs may differ for some ethnic groups and for older adults.
What if I am outside the range?
It is a prompt to look at other measures such as waist size, diet, activity and blood tests, ideally with a health professional.
