How the Dividend Yield Calculator works
Enter the share price, the annual dividend per share, how many shares you own and what you paid.
Dividend yield is the annual dividend divided by the current price.
Yield on cost uses your purchase price instead.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Current share price | $50 |
|---|---|
| Annual dividend per share | $2 |
| Number of shares | 200 |
| Your purchase price per share | $38 |
- Yield = $2 ÷ $50 = 4.00%.
- Yield on cost = $2 ÷ $38 = 5.26%.
- 200 shares pay $400 a year, or $33.33 a month.
Result:
| Current dividend yield | 4.00% |
|---|---|
| Yield on cost | 5.26% |
| Annual dividend income | $400.00 |
| Monthly average | $33.33 |
| Position value | $10,000 |
Frequently asked questions
Is a high dividend yield good?
Not automatically. An unusually high yield can signal that the price has fallen because the market expects a cut. Check the payout ratio and earnings.
Are dividends guaranteed?
No. Companies can reduce or suspend dividends at any time.
